Fresnoy, Charles Alphonse Du
Fresnoy, Charles Alphonse Du a very eminent French painter, was born in Paris in 1611, and studied in the school of Francois Perrier, after which he visited Italy. In 1656 he returned to his native city, where he painted, among other works, a fine picture of St. Margaret, for the church of that name. He died in Paris in 1665. He was occupied during a long period of his life in preparing for publication his admirable poem on art, De Arte Graphica, which was issued after his death. See Spooner, Biog.
