Burg, Franz Josef Von a German theologian, leader of the Ultramontanists in Baden, was born March 23, 1803, at Zell-on-the-Harmersbach. He studied at Freiburg, Heidelberg, and Gottingen, and commenced his lectures at Freiburg in 1829, where he was also made professor extraordinarius in 1833, and in 1836 professor extraordinarius of the law-faculty. In 1837 he was elected member of the House of Representatives. The liberalism which he at first espoused he soon exchanged for ultramontanism, and in a short time he' became the leader of the clerical party. In 1874 he was elected member of the German Parliament, and died Feb. 1, 1878, at Freiburg.
