Alden, Timothy

Alden, Timothy was born at Yarmouth, Mass., Aug. 28, 1771, and graduated in 1794 at Harvard, where he was distinguished for his knowledge of Oriental languages. In 1799 he was ordained pastor of the Congregational church at Portsmouth, N. H., but in 1805 devoted himself to teaching. He conducted female schools successively in Boston, Newark. New York, and in 1817 was appointed president of Meadville College, Penn., which office he held till 1831. He died at Pittsburg, July 5, 1839.
