Wild Beast of the Islands
Wild Beast Of The Islands is the rendering of the A.V. at Isa 13:22; Isa 34:14; Jer 1:19, of the Heb. word which occurs in this sense only in the plur. אַיַּי, iyim, although it frequently occurs both in the sing. and plur. in the sense of "island." The ancient interpreters variously understand cats (Chald. and Kimchi) and spectres (Sept. ὀμπλεμταύρος); but later writers generally agree that the jackal (q.v.) is meant, from its habit of howling (Bochart, Hieroz. 1:843).
