Van Hoeck, Jan
Van Hoeck, Jan a Flemish painter, was born at Antwerp about 1600. He studied with Rubens, and afterwards at Rome. He was much employed by the emperor Ferdinand II of Italy, but eventually returned to his own country, where he died about 1650. He was an admirable painter in portrait and history. His most famous painting is the Christ on the Cross, in the Church of St. Sauveur at Bruges, said to be one of the fittest pictures in Belgium.
