Universal Bishop

Universal Bishop a title assumed by the Roman prelates succeeding Gregory I (588-604). The patriarchs of the Eastern Church, particularly John Jejunator, had claimed the title of ecumenical patriarch. This Gregory denounced as arrogant and antichristian.
