Tropes

Tropes or sequence, are verses sung before the holy Gospel in the mass. They are a kind of prose, written in a species of verse, though unfettered by any recognized law of meter. They were introduced at the close of the 9th century. Four only are found in the Roman missal. SEE SEQUENCE.
