Thomson, William, D.D.

a prelate of the Church of England, was born at Whitehaven, February 11, 1819. He graduated from Queen's College, Oxford, in 1840, and became successively fellow, tutor, dean, bursar, and provost of Queen's College. In 1842 he was rector of St. Nicholas, Guilford. In 1848 and again in 1856 he was select preacher of the University; and in ,853 he was Bampton lecturer. He was rector of All-Saints, Marylebone, in 1855, and from 1858 to 1861 was preacher at Lincoln's Inn. In 1860 he became chaplain to the queen, and the following year bishop of the sees of Gloucester and Bristol, and in 1863 archbishop of York and primate of England. He died December 25, 1890.
