Splay

Splay (old Fr. disployer), the expansion given to doorways, windows, and other openings in walls, etc., by slanting the sides. This mode of construction prevails in Gothic architecture, especially on the inside of windows, but is very rarely, if ever, used in classical architecture. The term is also applied to other slanted or sloped surfaces, such as cants, bevels, etc.
