Smith, Matthew

Smith, Matthew, a Presbyterian minister, was born in Antrim County, near Belfast, Ireland, in 1825, where he received his early education. He studied theology at Paisley, Scotland, and was ordained and installed pastor of a Presbyterian church near Belfast in 1846. In 1850 he emigrated to America, and was stated supply for the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church at Milton, Pa., where he labored for more than a year, and afterwards removed to Wisconsin as an Associate Reformed missionary. In 1854 he accepted a commission from the Americani Home Missionary Society, and became stated supply of the Presbyterian Church at Centerville, Ia. He died Aug. 13, 1859. Mr. Smith was a faithful minister, attending diligently to all the duties of his calling, and endearing himself to all his people. See Wilson, Presb. Hist. Almanac, 1861, p. 164. (J.L.S.)
