Schut, Cornelius

Schut, Cornelius, a Flemish painter, was born at Antwerp in 1597. He was a pupil of Rubens; and when he had finished his studies in 1619, he worked with great success in churches and convents. His best painting is in the cupola of the Cathedral at Antwerp, and represents the Assumption of the Virgin; and the Martyrdom of St. George in the museum of the same city shows his skill. Schut possessed a brilliant imagination and great facility of execution, which, in a large measure, compensated for his feebleness of design. He is considered one of the best of Rubens' pupils.
