Mercer, Alexander Gardiner, D.D.

a Protestant Episcopal clergyman, was born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 4, 1817. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1837, and studied one year in Princeton Theological Seminary; became rector of St. John's Church, Clifton, N.Y., in 1847; in 1853 professor in the University of Pennsylvania; in 1855 rector of Trinity Church, Newport, R.I.; in 1860 assistant at Trinity Church, Boston; in 1862 rector of All- Saints' Chapel, Newport, where he remained until his death, November 3, 1882.
