Mahan, Asa, D.D., LL.D.
a Congregational minister, was born in Verilon, N.Y., November 9, 1799; graduated from Hamilton College in 1824, and from Andover Theological Seminary, in 1827, was a pastor until 1835, when he became president of Oberlin College (1835-50); president and professor of mental and moral philosophy in Cleveland University, 1850-54; was pastor again in 1865-61; thereafter president and professor of mental and moral philosophy in Adrian College until 1871; after that date without charge; and after the year 1874 resided in England until his death, April 4, 1889. Dr. Mahan edited for many years, a monthly entitled the Divine Life.
