Lampadephoria

Lampadephoria (from λαμπάς, a torch, and φέρω, to bear), ancient Grecian games, celebrated in honor of Prometheus, Athena, and Hephaestus, who taught men the use of fire. The game consisted in carrying an unextinguished torch through certain distances by a successive chain of runners; each taking it up at the point where another left it, and the one who permitted it to go out losing the game.
