La Poype (De Vertieu), Jean Claude De
La Poype (de Vert-ieu), Jean Claude De a French prelate, was born in 1655, of an ancient family of Poitou. He became vicar to M. de St. Georges, archbishop of Lyons, and in 1702 was called to the episcopal see of Beziers. This he refused, and the same year became bishop of Poictiers. In 1716 he was one of the prelates who signed the article demanding of the pope an explanation of the bull Unigenitus. He died February 3, 1732, near Poictiers. He was in part author of an estimable work entitled, Compendiosae Institutiones Theologicae (Poictiers, 1708). The questions are here treated with great precision and method. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
