Kartan

Kar'tan

(Heb. Kartan', קִרתָּן, double city, an old dual from קֶרֶת; Sept. Καρθάν v. r. Θεμμών and Νοεμμών), a town of Naphtali, assigned to the Gershonite Levites, and appointed to be one of the cities of refuge (Jos 21:32). In the parallel passage (1Ch 6:76) it is called by the equivalent name of KIRJATHAIM. The associated names suggest the probability of some locality near the north-western shore of the Sea of Tiberias, perhaps the ruined village marked as el-Katanah on Van de Velde's map, on wady Furam, about midway between Lake Tiberias and the Huleh.
