Jayne, Peter

Jayne, Peter a pioneer Methodist Episcopal minister, born at Marblehead, Mass., in 1778, entered the itinerancy in 1797, and in 1805-6 was stationed in Boston, where he died Sept. 5, 1806. Mr. Jayne was a man of great promise and rare abilities. His style was terse and vigorous, his piety consistent, and his manners ingenuous. His early death was deplored by his brethren as the eclipse of a morning star. See Minutes of Conferences, i, 146; Stevens, Memorials of Methodists, 1, ch. 26. (G. L. T.)
