Iroquois Version of the Scriptures

Iroquois Version Of The Scriptures This version is of very recent date. There are also Iroquois Indians in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario who do not understand the Scriptures in Mohawk published by the British and Foreign Bible Society. For the benefit of these Indians, the Four Gospels were published in 1880 at Montreal. The translation was made by chief Joseph Oncsakeural, revised by Jean Dion and the Reverend T. Laforte. Chief Joseph had all qualifications for the translation, since, in 1865, under the direction of the Roman Catholic missionaries at Oka, and with the approval of the Roman Catholic bishop of Montreal, he prepared a translation into Iroquois of the Gospels and Epistles used in the Missal.
