Homilius, Gottfried, August One of the most celebrated German organists and Church composers of the 18th century was born at Rosenthal Feb. 2, 1714. In 1742 he became organist at the "Frauenkirche" at Dresden, and in 1755 was promoted musical director. He died June 1, 1785. Among his published musical works those considered best are, Passionscantate (1755), and Weihnachtscantate (1777). — Brockhaus, Conv. Lex. 8, 76.
