High Altar

High Altar is the chief, central, or principal altar of a church. Other altars, in old documents, are often called "low altars," to distinguish them from that which is the chief altar. When there are many chapels in a church, clustering on either side of the chief chapel or chancel, the principal chancel, containing the high. altar, is sometimes called the "high chancel." SEE ALTAR.
