Gruppe, Otto Friedrich

Gruppe, Otto Friedrich a German philosopher and antiquarian, was born at Dantzic, April 15, 1804. He studied at Berlin, but as he opposed the Hegelian system of philosophy, the academical career was closed up to him, till at last, in 1844, he was made professor of philosophy. Gruppe died January 7, 1876, at Berlin. He wrote Antdus (Berlin, 1831): — Wendepunkt der Philosophie im 19. Jahrhundert (1834): — Gegenwart und Zukunft der Philosophie in Deutschland (1855). These works were all directed against Hegel. Of his poetical productions we only mention, Ruth, Tobias, Sulamith (1857). (B.P.)
