Gregory XIV (Nicolo Sfondrati)

Gregory XIV (Nicolo Sfondrati), Pope, was elected by the influence of the Jesuit party, Dec. 5, 1590. His short reign was taken up chiefly in efforts to sustain the league in France against Henry IV. He died Oct. 15, 1591. — Ranke, Hist. of Papacy, i, 536.
