Golod, John

Golod, John an Armenian patriarch of Constantinople, was born at Bales, and educated in the monastery of Amerdolu. During his patriarchate three churches belonging to the Armenians of Constantinople, which had been burned down, were rebuilt with taste and elegance. He also built several schools. The only writing of which he is the author is a profession of faith which he addressed to the papal court at Rome. He sought to re-establish the harmony between the national Armenians and the united Armenians or Roman Catholics. He was accused of softness by his people, and seeing that the preaching of the missionaries gave occasion to troubles, he closed their churches. Golod died in 1741. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
