Girdlestone, Charles

Girdlestone, Charles a minister of the Church of England, was born March 6, 1797, and graduated at Oxford in 1818. He became successively fellow of Balliol College, university examiner, vicar of Sedgeley (Staffuordshire) in 1826, rector of Alderley (Cheshire) in 1837, of Kingswinford (Staffordshire) in 1847, and died April 28, 1881, at Weston-super-Mare. He was a voluminous writer on theological subjects, from the Low-Church point of view, and published, among other religious works, A Family Commentary on the Bible (1832-42): — The Book of Psalms, according to the two authorized translations, in parallel columns, with marginal notes (1836): — Christendom Sketched from history in the Light of Holy Scriptures (1870).
