Ginnungagap

Ginnunga-gap the gulf of delusion, a vast, void abyss, which the ancient Scandinavians believed to be the primeval state of the material creation. Into this capacious gulf, light as imponderable ether, flowed from the south the envenomed streams of Elivagar (q.v.), and the farther they retired from their source the more the temperature became reduced, and at last the fluid mass congealed in Ginnunga-gap.
