Fontana, Prospero

Fontana, Prospero an eminent historical and portrait painter, was born at Bologna in 1512, and studied under Francucci. His masterpiece is at Bologna, in Santa Maria della Grazie. In the same church is an admirable picture of The Annunciation, by him. He also executed the Descent from the Cross, in the Bolognese Academy. He died in 1597. See Hoefer, Nouv.
