Elias
Eli'as (᾿Ηλίας, in Maccabees, elsewhere and in N.T. ᾿Ηλίας, Vulg. Elias, but in Cod. Amiat. Helias), the Graecized form in which the name of ELIJAH SEE ELIJAH (q.v.) is given in the A.V. of the Apocrypha and N.T. (Ecclus. 48:1, 4, 12; 1 Macc. 2:58; Mt 11:14; Mt 16:14; Mt 17:3-4,10-12; Mt 27:47,49; Mr 6:15; Mr 8:28; Mr 9:4-5,11-13; Mr 15:35-36; Lu 1:17; Lu 4:25-26; Lu 9:8,19,30,33,54; Joh 1:21,25; Ro 11:2; James v. 17). In Ro 11:2, the reference is not to the prophet, but to the portion of Scripture designated by his name, the words being ἐν ᾿Ηλιᾷ; "in Elias," not as in A.V. "of Elias." — Smith, s.v.
