Dumont, Gabriel

Dumont, Gabriel was born at Crest, in Dauphiny, August 10, 1680. His first settlement was over the Walloon church in Leipzig. In 1720 he was called to Rotterdam. Here he was held in very high estimation. He was also for a time chaplain to the Dutch embassy at Paris. His essays, included in Saurin's Discours sur la Bible, and also in Masson's Histoire critique de la republique des lettres, bear witness to his extensive knowledge, and especially to his acquaintance with the Oriental languages. A volume of valuable sermons from his pen was published after his death by his colleague, De Superville (Rotterdam, 1749, 8vo). He died January 1, 1748.
