Doyle, Mary

Doyle, Mary a philanthropist of the Society of Friends, eldest daughter of Edward Doyle, of Ferns, Ireland, was compelled early in life to earn her own livelihood. In 1796 she and her sister Anne, with their small savings, opened a shop in Ballytore, Ireland. They prospered until the rebellion of 1798, when the military plundered them of their provisions and outlaws robbed them of their money. After the rebellion their business prospered again. Mary was skilful in medical knowledge, and devoted herself to the relief of the poor. Anne died in 1822. Her sister continued to devote herself to works of charity, and died April 6, 1834, aged seventy-one years. See The Friend, 8:167.
