Diman, Jeremiah Lewis, D.D.

a Congregational minister, was born at Bristol, R.I., May 1, 1831. He studied under Reverend James N. Sikes, of Bristol; graduated from Brown University in 1851; and, after spending two years in Germany, entered Andover Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1856. On December 9 of the latter year he was ordained over the First Church in Fall River, Massachusetts; in 1860 he became pastor of Harvard Church, Brookline; and from 1864 until the close of his life, February 3, 1881, he was professor of history and political economy in Brown University. From 1873 he was a corresponding member of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Among his published addresses is The Historic Basis of Belief, one of the Boston lectures (1870): — Historical Address at the 200th Anniversary in Bristol, R.I. by Recent Theories (1881). He edited the third and fifth volumes of the Narragansett Club publications, containing "John Cotton's answer to Roger Williams" and "John Fox digg'd out of his Burrowes."
