Dies (or Diaz), Gaspar
Dies (or Diaz), Gaspar a Portuguese painter, sometimes called "the Portuguese Raphael," flourished about 1525, and was instructed in the school of Michael Angelo at Rome. On his return to Portugal he executed, by order of the king, a number of excellent pictures for the churches. In 1534 he painted his celebrated Descent of the Holy Spirit for the Church of the Miseracordia. He died at Lisbon in 1571. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, s.v.; Spooner, Biog.
