Cymbalum
Cymbalum This word is occasionally used for a bell, or some other sonorous instrument used instead of a bell. Thus Gregory the Great (Dialogue, 1:9) speaks of a cymbalum; and Durandus (Rationale, 1:4, § 2) of monks being called to the refectory by the sound of a cymbalum which hung in the cloister. See Smith, Diet. of Christ. Biog. s.v. SEE CYMBAL.
