Cross, Market

Cross, Market, is an erection of stone, commonly vaulted, supported on four or more pillars, and entered by arched apertures on each side, surmounted by a cross, usually built in the centre of the cross-streets, for the shelter of persons attending market. Many curious and remarkable ancient specimens exist; e.g. at Glastonbury, Chichester, Malmesbury, and Winchester. All these are of Pointed architecture.
