Converse, John Kendrick

Converse, John Kendrick a Presbyterian and Congregational minister, was born at Lyme, N.H., June 15, 1801. His preliminary education was acquired at Thetford Academy. In 1827 he graduated from Dartmouth College, and during the two years following was a teacher and editor in Richmond, Virginia. Soon after his graduation from Princeton Theological Seminary he was ordained pastor, August 9, 1832, at Burlington, Vermont, where he continued to minister for twelve years; and then, for more than twenty-five years was principal of the Burlington Female Seminary. For a long time he was secretary of the Vermont Colonization Society, and was also general agent of the American Colonization Society. He died at Burlington, October 3, 1880. See Cong.
