Coles, Elisha

Coles, Elisha, a native of Northamptonshire, was made steward of Magdalen College, Oxford, during the Commonwealth, when the famous Independent, Dr. Goodwin, was head of that college. After the Restoration be obtained a clerkship in the East India House, which he is supposed to have held until his death in 1688. His name is preserved by his well-known treatise entitled A practical Treatise on God's Sovereignty, originally published in 1673, 4to, and many times reprinted. It is thoroughly Calvinistic.
