Cobia, Daniel

Cobia, Daniel a Protestant Episcopal minister, was born at Charleston, S.C., September 13, 1811. On leaving school he entered Charleston College, from which he graduated in 1829. In 1830 he entered the General Theological Seminary in New York city, from which he duly graduated. In 1833 he was ordained deacon and immediately took charge of St. Stephen's Chapel, Charleston, especially interesting himself in Sunday-school work. Three churches in his native city having invited him to become pastor, he accepted the invitation from St. Philip's, beginning his ministry there in September, 1834. He was ordained priest September 13, 1835. After spending a short time at Wilmington, N.C., and at St. Mary's, Georgia, for the benefit of his health, he sailed for the island of St. Thomas, and, a few days after, for the island of St. Croix, where his health improved somewhat; but he soon began rapidly to decline, and died in Charleston, S.C., February 8, 1837. Mr. Cobia was a remarkably eloquent preacher, and his chief characteristic was his religious zeal. One volume of his sermons was issued after his death. Sse Sprague, Annals of the Amer. Pulpit, 5:719.
