Clowes, John

Clowes, John, an English clergyman, was born at Manchester, Oct. 31,1743, and was a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1769 he was made rector of St. John's Church. Manchester, and in 1773 became one of the first English disciples of Swedenborg, whose doctrines he was active in promoting, although he retained his rectorship for almost sixty years. He died at Leamington May 29, 1831, leaving Restoration of Pure Religion, two volumes of Sermons, and translated Swedenborg's Arcana Coelestia, and other works.
