Cibot, Pierre Martial

Cibot, Pierre Martial a French missionary, was born at Limoges in 1727. He studied in the College of Louis-le-Grand at Paris, and joined, when young, the society of the Jesuits. He distinguished himself by teaching philosophy. His zeal for the propagation of the faith led him to China in 1758. His description of his journey is interesting. The emperor of China made him his gardener and mathematician. Cibot wrote, in illustration of the book of Esther, a work still unprinted, consisting of three volumes, of which ample extracts have been given in the last ten volumes of Memoires de la Chine. He died at Pekin, August 8, 1780. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, s.v.
