Chenowith, George D

Chenowith, George D., a Methodist Episcopal minister, was born Aug. 3, 1811, in Berkeley County, West Virginia;. He received a common-school education, spending some time at Mount Hope Seminary. He was converted at a camp-meeting; in 1832 was licensed, and in 1833 joined the Baltimore Conference on trial, in which he labored thirty-five years, filling many of the best appointments in the conference, and serving four years as presiding elder. He became a supernumerary in 1868, on account of failing health, and in 1870 received a government appointment, which he held until his sudden death in Washington, D. C., May 18, 1880.
