Chaumont, Denis

Chaumont, Denis, a French missionary, was born at Eragny, near Gisors, Nov. 15, 1752. After preliminary theological studies, he entered, in 1775, the seminary of foreign missions. For six years he was employed in the province of Fo- Kien, in China, and was called back in 1784, to become director of the Seminary of Paris. In 1792 he went to England, where he devoted himself to the interests of Catholic missions. During the French Revolution he had the oversight of the missionaries. On his return to France, in 1814, his fellows chose him superior of the seminary, in which position lie remained until his death, Aug. 25, 1819. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog Generale, s.v.
