Challis, James

Challis, James an English divine and scholar, was born in 1803, and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1825 as senior wrangler. He was ordained in 1830, and in 1836 was appointed professor of astronomy and experimental philosophy in Cambridge University, and director; positions which he held until his death, Dec. 4, 1882. In 1861 he published Creation in Plan and Progress, a reply to Charles Wycliffe Goodwin's treatise on the Mosaic cosmogony in the celebrated Essays and Reviews. He was also the author of twelve volumes of astronomical observations and of many scientific papers.
