Chakam

Chakam (Heb. חָכָם, a wise man), the name given in some countries to the chief or presiding rabbi among the modern Jews, who holds a spiritual and, to some extent, civil authority over a country or large district. The term is usually applied to the chief rabbi among the Spanish or Portuguese Jews.
