Cawood, John

Cawood, John an English clergyman and poet, was born at Matlock, Derbyshire, March 18, 1775. He graduated from St. Edmund's Hall, Oxford, in 1801; became curate at Ribbesford, Dowles, and Bewdley, and died November 7, 1872. Besides several prose works, he published occasional hymns, a number of which were inserted in Cotterill's collection, and the one beginning "Hark, what mean those holy voices," has become especially popular.
