Castro, Leon De
Castro, Leon de a Spanish theologian, canon of Valladolid, was for more than fifty years professor of Oriental languages at Salamanca, where he died in 1586. Though well acquainted with the Hebrew, he gave his preference to the ancient versions, especially the Vulgate. He asserted that the Hebrew text was corrupted by the Jews when they invested it with the vowel points. Castro's works are, Commentaria in Esaiam (Salamanca, 1570): — Apologeticus pro Lectione Apostolica et E'vansqelica (ibid. 1585): — Commentaria in Oseam (1586). See Simon, Hist. Crit. V.
