Castelli (or Castello), Giovanni Battista

Castelli (or Castello), Giovanni Battista (called il Bergamasco), an eminent Italian painter, was born in the year 1490, and studied under Aurelio Busso, at Crema. Soon after leaving this master he went to Rome for improvement. On returning to Genoa he painted for the Church of San Marcellino. In the monastery of San Sebastiano is his celebrated picture of the martyrdom of that saint, which gained him high reputation. He died at Madrid in 1570.
