Cardwell, Edward, D.D., a learned English divine and ecclesiastical historian, was born at Blackburn, in Lancashire, in 1787. . He studied at Oxford University, became. a fellow of Brazenose College in 1809, and a university examiner in 1814. He was appointed Camden professor of history in 1826, and succeeded Dr.
Whately as principal of St; Alban's Hall in 1831. -He filled several prominent offices. in the university, and was also private secretary to three successive chancellors. He died at Oxford. in May, 1863. Among .his numerous works are an edition of Aristotle's Ethics with notes: — Lectures on the Coinage of the Greeks and Romans .(Oxford, 1832): a students' edition of, the Greek Testament: a critical edition of the History of the Jewish War, by Josephus:-The Two Books of, Common Prayer Compared.
