Caprano, Pietro

Caprano, Pietro, an Italian prelate and scholar, was born at Rome in 1739. He was made doctor of theology at the Gregorian University, and chosen professor of biblical and ecclesiastical history. Pius VII appointed him prelate of the chamber, and secretary of the commission charged with the correction of the liturgical books of the Eastern Church. Leo XII made him archbishop of Iconium, secretary of the Propaganda, and cardinal, in 1828. Pius VIII appointed him prefect of the Congregation of the Index, which position he held until his death, at Rome, Feb. 24, 1834. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, s.v.
