Cant, Andrew (2)

Cant, Andrew (2), a Scotch clergyman, was promoted from regent at Marischal College, Aberdeen; called to Newbattle in 1657, but declined; admitted to the living at Liberton in 1659; and transferred to Trinity College Church, Edinburgh, in 1673. In 1674 a complaint was made to the privy council that his carriage and expressions were insolent," and the bishop was ordered by the king to remove him back to Liberton; he was reproved and removed to the High Church, Edinburgh, in 1675, holding in conjunction the principalship of the university, elected thereto by the town council. He died Dec. 4, 1685. He was an eminent and solid preacher. He published three works in Latin. See Fasti Eccles. Scoticance, i, 27, 32, 115.
