Caldwell, Asa
Caldwell, Asa a Baptist minister, was born in Orange County, N. Y., in 1796, 'and united with the 'Church'in Spencer, Tioga Co. Not long after this he -commenced preaching, in which work he continued until nearly the close of his life. He was pastor of church-es in Oswego, Tomrpkins, Herkimer, and Cortland counties, where many souls were converted through his instrumentality. He is represented as having been an -earnest scriptural preacher, with a warm and catholic heart, and a vigorous advocate of temperance and antislavery. Not meeting with the sympathy which he looked for as a moral reformer, he became disheartened, and for a time withdrew from association with his brethren. In January, 1859, he closed his connection with the Calvinist Baptists, and became a member of a Free-will Baptist Church, in Summer Hill, Cayuga Co. He died in Locke, Cavuga Co., June 26,1859.
