Bucer, Gerson

Bucer, Gerson a Dutch theologian, was born in the latter part of the 17th century at Veere, where he also was settled as minister and spent his life. He was well versed in Hebrew, and also in Church government, upon which he wrote a volume, De Gubernatione Ecclesiae, in opposition to Dorman, a famous English divine. This book drew upon him the hatred of James I, but found so much favor at home that it went very soon to a fourth edition. He died in 1631. He was one of the company appointed by the Synod of Dort for the translation of the Old Test. for the famous Staatenbijbel, or States' Bible. (B.P.)
